How to Find the Personal Historian For You

Personal Historians come in all shapes and sizes, just as each client is uniquely individual. To find the right personal historian for you, we suggest the following:
  1. Review the Association of Personal Historians Membership Directory and develop a short list of candidates who do the type of work you need.

  2. Call these individuals and talk with them about their work and about your project.

  3. If you aren't sure what you want, call the people whose work interests you, and in the process, you will discover more about what you want and how personal historians can help you.

  4. Once you have one or two personal historians in mind, ask for references and if there's a way you can see samples of their work.

In this way, you'll make sure you've found a personal historian who can provide you with an exceptionally high quality experience and outcome fitting your unique needs.

The Association of Personal Historians Inc. (APH) is a nonprofit international network of talented and trained professionals. We are Personal and Family Historians who have developed the skills, abilities and experience to elicit, record, and preserve for posterity the life stories and memoirs of individuals, families, organizations, businesses and entire communities.

If you're not sure where to start, Find a Personal Historian in our Membership Directory in your area who offer one or two terms that best fit your needs. Call or e-mail those members, tell them what you want to accomplish, and ask how they can aid you. Chances are, they'll suggest wonderful ideas and options that can help you shape your project. Then you can get started on your own unique life story. Before you know it, you'll have more than you ever thought possible—a legacy that will last for generations to come!
